A frenum is a muscle attachment which extends from inner lip (in both upper and lower jaw) to the oral mucosa close to the gum line. If the frenum is markedly large and positioned high, very close to the gum margins, it might result in midline diastema or gap between the two upper front teeth. It might also contribute to excessive tension on the gum margins resulting in gum recession and inflammation. Frenectomy is a procedure designed to surgically remove the frenum.
